Newburyport AYC Summer Sailing Program
2019 Sailing School Registration is now open!
We offer a learn to sail program for children ages 9-17. We also run an adult program in the evenings for ages 18 and over. Registration is now open for the 2019 summer season.
Established in 1885, the American Yacht Club is one of the oldest continuously operated yacht clubs in the country. For over 50 years the AYC has been providing instruction to its members, families and the community. Our certified staff instructors, using a fleet of five boats, annually teach 100 plus children the joy of sailing! There is a minimum of 6 children to run a course and a maximum of 15 students per class with 8 weekly sessions offered during July and August. This popular program fills up quickly!
AYC Sailing Program Team
Coordinators Chris Baker, Amy Sison, and Dave Sestini have extensive sailing and maritime experience. Two full-time instructors lead land and on-the-water instruction following a curriculum based on the recommended US Sailing Program and adapted for sailing on Joppa Flats and the Merrimack River.
The Newburyport Summer Sailing Program has chosen the “Hunter 140” as our primary training boat. This boat provides good stability for our basic and intermediate levels of training and has proven to be a safe and enjoyable platform for the beginning sailor. The course size is designed to have three sailors per boat.
Each student is encouraged to bring their own U.S.C.G. approved life jacket/personal flotation device (PFD). A student wearing their own PFD will ensure the best fit and comfort. However, if needed, students will be provided with one of the club’s U.S.C.G. approved life jackets. Our chase boats are equipped with VHF radios and First Aid kits. Instructors are always nearby on the chase boat to assist with learning and for student safety.
